Oxford Diecast AHT005

The Austin Heavy 12/4 was introduced in 1921 and although the mechanical specifications did not change much between then and the late 1930s when it ceased production, there were certain external differences that helped to date the car. Spoked wheels were introduced in 1933 and no open cars were produced after 1934, which puts our 1:43 scale Oxford release in that precise period.

Registered MR 8240, our four-door model is as used by Wiltshire Police and is completely black apart from the silver running boards. There is no indication that it is a Police vehicle, as it is devoid of beacons or the usual Police badge, which is interesting. Door handles, radiator grille and other brightwork have been given a chrome finish and the ‘canvas’ hood is matt black. The interior is also black apart from the silver instrument panel.

This is the early version, which was manufactured between 1952-1953. Many of us will associate the Austin Princess with the Royal Family, with whom it was a favourite form of transport. It is therefore no surprise to hear that the soon-to- be crowned Queen Elizabeth II had the first two off the production line, delivered to Buckingham Palace shortly after the launch at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1952.

Austin had commissioned the coachbuilders Vanden Plas to design a new 7 to 8 seater limousine and the Austin A135 long wheelbase Princess limousine with elegant 6-light coachwork was the result. The launch price was £2480. Over the years, it was to appear in a host of top class colours , including two-tone, all with superior interior trim, alongside lots of ‘optional extras’ for the ultimate driving and passenger experience.

Oxford Diecast APH003

The Austin Princess was a luxury 2-ton limousine launched in 1947, when it was the most expensive flagship in the Austin range. Its high quality finish included leather seats, fine carpeting and burred walnut dashboard and door cappings.

Given its luxurious feel, the Princess fitted the bill not only as a luxury wedding car but also a hearse. Only the third release off the new tooling, our latest 1:43 scale Austin Princess hearse is registered KCP 262G.

The model features a dramatic silver grey/black colour scheme with contrasting silver masking to window frames, radiator grille, bumpers and wheel inserts.

A special detail to note is the metal framework on the roof, which would be used to hold wreaths and flowers perhaps.

Internally, the dashboard is brown.

The front seats, steering wheel, carpet and door cappings are all black.

The rear detail includes the layout needed for transporting the coffin with load bed, door cappings, floor and carpets finished in brown

The rear seats and side panels are black.

A final detail, rounding off this fine replica is the Princess marque reproduced above the number plate on the front and below the number plate on the rear.
