The SMS Derfflinger was a battle cruiser of the German Imperial Navy built just before the outbreak of World War I, leader of a class of three ships to which also belonged the Lützow and the Hindenburg. The Derfflinger class cruisers were larger and incorporated significant improvements over previous German battlecruisers in terms of their armament, armor and range of performance. The ship was named after Field Marshal Georg von Derfflinger, who fought in the Thirty Years’ War.
