    The SMS Scharnhorst was an armored cruiser (Großer Kreuzer in German) of the Kaiserliche Marine (German Imperial Navy), built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, German Empire and launched on the sea on October 24, 1907. He was the head of his class, and received his name in honor of the Prussian general Gerhard von Scharnhorst. SMS corresponds to Seiner Majestät Schiff (Ship of His Majesty) in German language.
