- After the end of World War II, many fire brigades inherited former military and National Fire Service Bedford QL 4×4 lorries that were converted into front line water tender fire engines. They were used especially in rural areas. They were fitted with a 400 gallon water tank and light portable pump. This Wiltshire Fire Brigade vehicle was one such example. When replaced by a more up to date fire engine, it was used as a general purpose lorry and painted green to match the Brigade’s other non-operational ancillary vehicles. The canvas cover and framework were easily removed, turning the vehicle into a lorry when required.
Our model, registered GYR 811, is decorated in dark green with black chassis and black interior. It also features a rolled up beige canvas canopy cleverly housed behind the front number plate. Â The Wiltshire Fire Brigade lettering is printed in yellow on the doors of the open backed truck with their colourful crest below. Additional details on our Bedford QLD include a separate roof hatch, roof spotlight and a separate front registration plate. Note too, a tow hook on the back and the spare wheel positioned between the cabin and the rear section.
