Ford Anglia 105E, Ladies Cup, RAC Rallye, 1959

Anne Hall’s rally career began in earnest when she and her sister won the Ladies’ Trophy in the first ever event she entered, the 1951 RAC, their Jaguar XK120 was also classified seventh overall.  She won the Ladies;’ again in the 1952 RAC and thereafter forged a very successful partnership with Shelia Van Damm, mainly driving Sunbeam Talbots, which included winning a Coupe Des Alps and numerous Ladies Trophies including 1954 Tulip and 1955 Monte.  She then rallied successfully for a couple of years with Nancy Mitchell in MG’s and Austins Healeys before being invited to become a Ford works driver in 1957.

Ann famously told Ford that if they wanted someone just to win the Ladies’ Prize they could get themselves another driver.  She considered herself a competitor first and foremost and was in fact half of the first ladies crew ever to win a UK National rally outright when she and Val Domleo won the 1961 Morecombe Rally.

Anne’s co-driver in the car modelled was Patsy Burt.  No mean driver herself, Patsy retired from a long, varied and successful motorsport career in 1970 on a high, winning the RAC British Spring Championship outright driving a fearsome 4.4 litre McLaren-Oldsmobile M3.

The 1959 RAC rally was the first year of Jack Kemsley’s period in charge. Of the four anglias entered in the race the highest finisher was the car modelled here in which Anne Hall and Patsy Burt won the Ladies Prize and finished 20th overall, a remarkable performance for a car of only 997cc.
